MATHS

INTENT:

Mathematics   is important in everyday life and, with this is mind, the purpose of   Mathematics at St Paul’s Primary School is to develop an ability to solve   problems, to reason, to think logically and to work systematically and   accurately. All children are challenged and encouraged to excel in Maths. At   St Paul’s we use the White Rose Maths  schemes of learning which provide an ambitious, connected curriculum accessible to all pupils in   school right through from Reception to Year 6. We introduce new mathematical concepts using a ‘Concrete,   Pictorial and Abstract’ approach; enabling all children to experience   hands-on learning when discovering new mathematical topics, and allowing them   to have clear models and images to aid their understanding. Arithmetic and   basic maths skills are practised daily to ensure key mathematical concepts   are embedded and children can recall this information to see the links   between topics in Maths. Ultimately, we want pupils to   become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, to be able to reason and to   solve problems. Our approach to mathematics embraces these National   Curriculum aims, and provides guidance to help pupils to become:

Visualisers – we use the   CPA approach to help pupils understand mathematics and to make connections   between different representations.

Describers – we place   great emphasis on mathematical language and questioning so pupils can discuss   the mathematics they are doing, and so support them to take ideas further.

Experimenters – as well as   being fluent mathematicians, we want pupils to love and learn more about   mathematics.

IMPLEMENTATION:

Maths at St Paul’s:

  • Basic Maths skills are taught daily, focussing on key mathematical skills including place value, the four   operations and fractions.

  • A range of White Rose Maths reasoning resources are used to challenge all children and give them the opportunity to reason with their understanding about Mathematics.

  • Maths feedback sessions are used to revisit previous learning and ensure Maths skills are embedded before moving onto their next Maths lesson.

  • Children are taught through targeted differentiated small group and mixed ability whole class lessons.

  • Lessons are sequenced and aligned to the White Rose Maths schemes of learning to ensure progression through maths topics.

  • Lessons use a Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract approach to guide children through their understanding of mathematical processes.

  • Homework is set to develop and review children's learning.

  • Where possible, links are made with other subjects across our Commando Joe’s RESPECT curriculum.

IMPACT:

As a result of our Maths teaching at St Paul's you will see:

  • Fluent mathematicians who have a love for mathematics

  • Engaged children who are all challenged.

  • Children who are able to visualise their mathematics to make connections between different representations.

  • Accurate use of mathematical language by pupils to support and develop mathematical understanding.

  • Confident children who can all talk about Maths and their learning and the connections between Mathematical topics.

  • Lessons that use a variety of resources to support learning.

  • Different representations of mathematical concepts.

  • Learning that is tracked and monitored to ensure all children make good progress.
