HISTORY
INTENT:
History at St. Pauls’ Catholic Primary School aims to ensure that our children connect with the past and leave school with a secure understanding of the chronology of British History, the wider world and the past of their own locality. Through our topics, we aim to provide interesting and exciting historical experiences to help children become better at being historians.
Through learning experiences in History children will:
Develop curiosity about the past leading to appreciation of history.
Make good use of local places of historical importance to develop historical skills and knowledge.
Practise higher order thinking skills through analytical thinking especially understanding that interpretations of historical events may differ.
Develop evaluation skills when considering a range of primary and secondary sources.
Establish a secure knowledge and understanding of historical events and significant historical figures.
Activate a growing vocabulary to communicate their understanding.
Develop the ability to enquire into historical themed questions and form their own opinions and interpretations of the past.
IMPLEMENTATION:
Our topics based approach is rooted in the knowledge and skills stated in the National Curriculum and topics are linked to our Commando Joe’s RESPECT Curriculum.
Our children’s journey as historical thinkers starts in EYFS where children begin to think about special events in their own lives and those of their families. As our children progress through KS1, Historical skills focus on the world around them and within living memory. They learn about the lives of significant people from the local area as well as significant events beyond living memory. This ensures a firm foundation for KS2 History.
In KS2 the progression of topics is set out to ensure that children deepen their learning. They make links in their understanding of chronology and gain historical perspective by making connections between the topics that they have learnt. They gain Knowledge and understanding about events, people and changes in the past.
They are able to make interpretations about historical events and sources.
Throughout our History curriculum children have the opportunity to:
Engage and enhance learning opportunities through local educational visits, capitalising on the proximity of local historical features, helping children to understand history in the context of real life.
Develop as inquisitive historians and make links with other subjects across our Commando Joe’s curriculum.
IMPACT:
As a result of our History teaching at St Paul's:
Children will become increasingly aware of how historical events have shaped the wider world they currently live in.
Children will become increasingly critical and analytical in their thinking, making informed and balanced judgements based on their knowledge of the past.
They will have an understanding of the history of their own locality..
Children will develop enquiry skills and be encouraged to pursue their own interests within a topic.
Where applicable children will have encountered or participated in high quality visits/visitors to further appreciate the impact of history.
